While the holiday season may be heading toward the finish line, some of you may still be basking in the afterglow of Christmas…or the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Possibly both. Far be it from me to ruin that feeling, but I’m going to ruin that feeling.
Do you know what the holidays and Star Wars make me think of?
The Star Wars Holiday Special!
Some of you have no idea what I’m talking about right now. You’re the lucky ones. The others…well, you may have just experienced an involuntary shudder. Bear with me, though. I may not be going where you think I’m going with this.
In 1978, the CBS television network aired the two-hour Star Wars Holiday Special, which starred the original films cast (Yes, even Harrison Ford) as well as several notable individuals such as Art Carney and Bea Arthur. The story, such as it was, centered around Chewbacca’s family and our favorite Wookiee’s efforts to get back to them to celebrate Life Day. Along the way there are songs, comedy sketches, and a cartoon featuring the very first appearance of Boba Fett.
And it is ALL absolutely terrible!
I’m not exaggerating here. It’s really REALLY bad. I had to watch it in small chunks, like a small child eating his broccoli very slowly in tiny pieces, just to get through it. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, which is why The Star Wars Holiday Special is not my Pick this week.
However, I bet you’re now curious, aren’t you? You want to see this monstrosity for yourself. How bad could it really be? No one should have to face the uncut special, but I can offer you a guide.
I talked about Jontron in a previous Pick of the Week post. He creates videos mainly focused on giving overviews of some interesting areas of video gaming (My previous post focused on his video about games based on the Titanic). Back in May 2015, he started a side series called StarCade in which he went through the many many video games based in the Star Wars universe. For his final video in the series, though, he takes on The Star Wars Holiday Special.
That video is my Pick of the Week. He distills the 2 hours of horror down to 24 minutes with his commentary. If you want to see what the holiday special was like, this is the way to experience it. Trust me.
One note about the video, though, once he completes the special, the video goes into a wrap up for the StarCade series that won’t make much sense unless you know quite a bit about JonTron. It also references one of his previous painful run-ins with Star Wars.
Enjoy the pain!
