I’m recommending something a bit different for my Pick of the Week this time around, so first let me ask that you bear with me. If you’re a fan of video games, you’ve probably already played my Pick, but I’m actually aiming this at the casual or non-gamers out there.
Go check out Grand Theft Auto V.
Yes, I’m serious.
Let’s handle the possible objections right up front. Yes, the game is rated Mature for a reason. There is a lot of potentially-offensive language in it. A LOT. And yes, you can visit a strip club, hire a prostitute, and horribly murder the game’s virtual populace in all sorts of ways.
All of that is completely true, but the game is also a gorgeously-realized open world. Go find a friend with a PS4, Xbox One, or PC connected to an HDTV who also owns the game and have them fire it up.
Once you get the hang of it, the driving controls are not difficult. Take a car (If you’re trying to avoid crime, the game’s main characters all have vehicles of their own, so you don’t have to steal anything) and go for a drive. Pick one of the many in-game radio stations to listen to (I tend to stick to Non-Stop Pop), and try driving into the city of Los Santos (modeled after Los Angeles) as the sun is setting and the lights of the city come on. Head up the west coast of the island where the game is set and enjoy the views.
I have spent hours seeing the sights, driving from the city, to the mountains, past wineries, into the desert, and back again. I guarantee that you will marvel at how detailed this game world is, and nothing is going to force you to go find a prostitute. If you do that, it’s all on you, pal.
