When Hitler and Rommel take over a casino in Africa and use it as a cover to start sending gold-plated superweapons back to Nazi troops in Europe via a submarine manned by coffee-addicted Italians, there’s only one team to call: Danger 5.
And if that description had you saying something along the lines of, “Wait, WHAT?” you’re not alone.
This week’s Pick, Danger 5, is comedy-action series that premiered in 2012 on Australian television. Australian PUBLIC television. Yes, while the United States gets Antiques Roadshow and Masterpiece Theater, the Australians get this bizarre series in which a team thwarts Hitler’s nefarious plots in a World War II that seems to be happening in the 1960s rather than the 1940s.
The episodes, with titles like “Lizard Soldiers of the Third Reich” and “Hitler’s Golden Murder Palace” (The actual title of the episode I described in the first paragraph.), are ridiculous in the extreme but also designed to resemble pulp men’s adventure magazines from the 1950s and 60s. I hate to give away any of the gag’s, but I will say that Stalin’s mustache is surprisingly comforting.
Season Two moves the setting up to the 1980s and changes the satire accordingly. Hitler, however, is constant.
Netflix has both seasons available for streaming, and, with only 14 half hours episodes in total, you can get through all of the show fairly quickly. Although, your brain may just wonder what the hell you’re watching.
