David Bowie 1947 - 2016

I guess, if I’d been pushed to consider it frankly, I’d have assumed David Bowie would live forever.  He seemed immortal, didn’t he?  Larger than flesh?  Sometimes it seemed he really was a Starman, a Space Oddity, just visiting here to share songs whose equal we’d never hear again and create images we’d spend lifetimes of our own trying to duplicate.  He’s always been here, or so it seemed.  One of the great musical geniuses of all time.

But in the end he was just human.  He gave us a lifetime of talent then turned his death into a piece of art.

“Look up here, I’m in heaven
...
Oh I'll be free
Just like that bluebird
Oh I'll be free
Ain't that just like me”

‘Lazarus’, Blackstar 2016

He wasn’t perfect.  And he wasn’t immortal.  I hadn’t considered that, not really.  So it was quite a shock to realize he was gone - poof - just like that.  Mortal, who’d have thought?  Not sent from the stars after all.  But for awhile, during ‘Life On Mars?’ or ‘Heroes’ or in the middle of The Hunger, I will still forget.  I'll expect him to endure, endlessly, because surely he can’t be gone.  It’s the art now, not the man, we’ll have to hang onto.  And I guess that has to be enough.

Farewell the Goblin King.  Farewell Ziggy Stardust.  Farewell David Bowie.
Thank you.
